Ypsilanti, Michigan, 1945. Engineer Preston Tucker dreams of designing the car of future, but his innovative envision will be repeatedly sabotaged by his own unrealistic expectations and the Detroit automobile industry tycoons.

Cherry is a nightclub singer with lots of men after her. Bob is a shoemaker who can predict people's future by looking at their used shoes. Two of Cherry's older suitors both get to hear of him and although they don't know each other both end up at his place for a prediction on their chances with Cherry. They become desperate and each decides to pay off her room mate to steal her shoes. They get in a big fight over her and she decides to run off with Bob. However, they follow the couple, confront them and make trouble.

When a successful young artist named Benjamin is involuntarily committed, he is completely baffled, for he doesn’t remember anything about what happened. Life in the psychiatric institute is violent and absurd, but step by step, Benjamin seems to come to grips with himself again. He starts to realize how narcissistic he used to be. When he is released and meets up with his old friends, he is confronted with yet another truth.

Old Nat Moyer is a talker, a philosopher, and a troublemaker with a fanciful imagination. His companion is Midge Carter, who is half-blind, but still the super of an apartment house. When he is threatened with retirement, Nat battles on his behalf. Nat also takes on his daughter, a drug dealer, and a mugger in this appealing version of a really 'odd couple'.

Unhappily married couple Roslyn and Michael lead separate affairs that lead to violent repercussions for all.
